I replaced my old bath tub with a new one. Do I need to put some kind of wall board behind the tub?

If you mean below the tubs curb level,no. The tub butts up against the studs.

If you mean above the curb, yes.I replaced my old bath tub with a new one. Do I need to put some kind of wall board behind the tub?
That will depend upon the condition of the wall. If the wall has not been damaged and you know from experience that it is in good condition, then maybe not.

You do not mention the type of tub that was in place nor the type that you replaced it with.

If it is the type of tub:

that can be placed in a recess in the room.

three of the sides of the tub touch a wall

It has a lip going up the wall about 1/2 inch.

Then it is a good idea to cover that lip with a waterproof or resistant wall board. You also have to run a bead of bathroom caulking along the joint between the wall board and the tub. We install tub against wall frame then cement board on top of the tub.

Good luck.
